AbstractRemote sensing by satellite has been a very useful tool for improving the oceanographic knowledge of the Southwestern South Atlantic Ocean (SWA). The water mass structure in the SWA is complex, especially in the region where the Brazil Current (BC) meets the equatorward Malvinas/Falklands Current (MC). This region, known as the BrazilMalvinas Confluence Zone (BMCZ), is considered one of the most complex regions of the world ocean. At the surface, BC carries the warm and saline Tropical Water, and MC carries the cooler, less saline, and nutrient-rich Subantarctic Water. This paper investigates a warm core eddy (ring) found in the SWA in November 2002 during the XXIth Brazilian Antarctic Operation as observed by in situ data, and AQUA-MODIS sea surface temperature and chlorophyll a concentration images of the region. MODIS imagery offers the opportunity for simultaneous two-dimensional comparison of biological (pigment) and physical (thermal) variability in the upper ocean. The surface fields generated from the satellite data contains interesting oceanographic patterns of importance in the dynamical and ecological understanding of this oceanic region.
